rejectedprincesses:

Here’s another one of my favorite Rejected Princesses — Nzinga Mbande, 17th-century African queen of what is now Angola.

She began her political life as her nation of Ndongo was fighting off a Portuguese invasion. Her brother, a by-all-accounts wimp, could not bend over backwards far enough for the Portuguese, and once he ascended to the throne, the Portuguese just tossed him in jail and took over. Nzinga approached the Portuguese and demanded her brother’s return and that they leave Ndongo. At their meeting, in a sign of disrespect, the Portuguese offered her no chair to sit in, instead providing merely a floor mat fit for servants.

In response, Nzinga ordered one of her servants to get on all fours, sitting on her as she would a chair. After the negotiations concluded, she slit her throat in full view of everyone, and informed them that the Queen of Ndongo does not use the same chair twice. Shortly thereafter, the Portuguese agreed to let her brother go.

With her brother now safely back home, she proceeded to murder him in his sleep, kill her brother’s son, and assume the throne herself - because if you’re going to do something right, you better do it yourself. From there, she moved south, conquered the infamous ruthless cannibal tribe known as the Jaga, made them her slaves, and waged war on the Portuguese for THIRTY FIVE YEARS.

Rumors of her badassness grew increasingly outlandish throughout her life. By some accounts, after killing her brother’s family, she ate their hearts to absorb their courage. As a pre-battle ritual, she was rumored to have decapitated slaves and drank their blood. It is widely-accepted that she maintained a 60-man-strong harem throughout her life — men who, by many accounts, would fight each other to the death for the right to share her bed for the night. She also apparently dressed some of them like women. Conversely, she staffed her army with a large number of women warriors.

After decades of killing the Portuguese, they eventually threw their hands up and negotiated a peace treaty. She died several years afterwards, at the ripe old age of eighty. There are statues of her all over Angola to this day. In fact, her outfit and axe are derived directly from one of those statues.

Let’s not pretend like the police actions taken this week are anything new. It’s just the most recent manifestation of a problem America has had for a very long time.

"MODERN DAY LYNCHINGS"

Kody (Pretty Boy) Ingham (pictured above) was found hanging from a tree in front of his white girlfriends house on July 15, 2013 (the same night as the George Zimmerman verdict) in Athens, Texas. it was chalked up as a suicide and no investigation ensued, even though two hours prior he called his mother to pick him up from the site he died at. no newspaper article, just a four sentence obituary in the local papers and his family has been trying hard to make any mainstream news channel blow up the story to find the killers.

Roy Veal was found hanging in Woodville, Mississippi in 2004. he originally lived in Seattle and went to his mother’s home in Woodville to help her fight for the rights to their family land against a white man. Oil had been found underneath the land.

Roy’s head was covered with a pillow case and burned papers of the documented proof he had to prove his mothers’ ownership were found burned at his feet. He was later found hanging from a tree. His death was ruled a suicide.

His family is still trying to get attention for the case

Reynard Johnson, 17, was found hanging from a tree on his front lawn on June 16, 2000 in Kokomo, Mississippi. His death was ruled a suicide even though the belt around his neck was not his. Authorities said since no hate group left a message by the body, there was nothing to investigate. Family members said the motive was his relationship with a white girl, he was constantly being harassed because of this.

There was a kid shot by a police officer in Utah (his name is Dillon Taylor I think) and his family says he was unarmed and the cop was wearing a camera but the police refuse to say what happened and they haven't been talking about that much on the news. There's going to be a demonstration for him and Michael brown outside the Wallace f. Bennett federal building in Utah and I was wondering if you could post this just to get the information out there?

I wish I could tell you this every morning you awake; that you are enough. That you are an intricate, vibrant life. That every soft breath from your lips, and every timid heartbeat, is precious and beautiful.

Sweet Potato Almond Butter Muffins

1 flax egg (1 Tbsp flaxseed meal + 2.5 Tbsp water)
3/4 cup sweet potato puree
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp canola oil (or melted coconut oil)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup oat flour (ground from rolled oats)
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
~1/4 cup roasted salted almond butter

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Prepare flax egg in a large mixing bowl and let set for a few minutes.
  3. Add sweet potato puree, brown sugar, oil, and vanilla extract and mix. Then add almond milk and stir once more.
  4. Carefully place whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon into a sifter and sift over wet ingredients. Then add oat flour on its own (as it does not sift well in my experience) and stir until just combined.
  5. Spoon batter into muffin tins until filled almost to the top. Then drop about 1 tsp almond butter onto the center of each muffin and gently swirl around with a toothpick or knife.
  6. Bake for 20-22 minutes (or more) until golden brown and a toothpick in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let rest in tins for 5 minutes. Then transfer to a cooling rack to let cool completely.
  7. Cool completely or they will not come off the wrapper well. Store in an air-tight container and refrigerate to ensure freshness. Will keep in the freezer for up to a few weeks.
